Organisational elections form a fundamental basis for a matured political party. Rooted in democratic ethos and the right of every member to make a free and fair choice, the Congress Party which took birth at 12 noon on 28 December, 1885, upheld this tradition more than any other party in most parts of the world. It was this functional feature that has provided the life, substance and energy to remain as the most vibrant voice of the people. The 100-plus years, the Congress has been in existence witnessed scores of party polls and these occassionally posed problems. The party had taken them all in its stride and moved forward. This month the process for yet another historic organisational election has begun and will conclude in October. An independent election authority has been formed under the party constitution with senior leader Ram Niwas Mirdha as Chairman.
