For a nation of diverse cultural and religious faiths and traditions like India any thought to move it in one particular narrow exclusive direction is totally unacceptable. So, when the BJP made the first move lifting th ban on RSS and welcomed government employees to join Shakhas, the whole nation received a shock. Shock, because most citizens thought that since BJP is only of the 22 parteners in the NDA Coalition, it will not try to implement its own agenda. Shock, also because, the then NDA partners kept silent till the Congress party, enraged by the BJP decision, declared a war to fight this preposterous step. The Congress President, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, called a massive rally at Ramlila Ground in New Delhi to issue an ultimatum to the BJP. Soon others, including the Left Parties and even the NDA partners like DMK, Telgu Desam and Trinamul Congress, joined the issue. The BJP was isolated and reversed its decision. It was indeed a great victory for secularism.
